Kelcy Warren built one of the largest energy infrastructure networks in the country by starting small and thinking big. In 1996, Warren and co-founder Ray Davis launched Energy Transfer as a modest intrastate natural gas pipeline operator in East Texas, running about 200 miles of pipe. Nearly three decades later, the company Kelcy Warren helped build operates close to 125,000 miles of pipeline, moving roughly one third of the nation’s natural gas and crude oil and almost 5 percent of global oil supply.
Humble Beginnings, Outsized Growth
The early years were lean. Warren and Davis paid salaries and little else while they tried to find their footing in a crowded midstream sector. That changed as the company began acquiring assets across Texas and beyond, gradually building the connective tissue between American drillers and the markets that needed their product. Kelcy Warren often frames the growth as a matter of persistence rather than luck. “When we began this whole journey, everything did not make sense until it did,” he says, describing how a sprawling map of pipes, terminals and processing plants eventually clicked into a coherent system.
A Simple Question, Repeated for Decades
Much of that system came from Warren’s habit of constantly reassessing what each mile of pipe was for. “We’ve done a good job of always asking, ‘What is the best purpose of that pipe?’ versus moving resources in other modes of transportation,” he says. That question guided Energy Transfer through the shale boom, a series of major acquisitions and a transformation from a single-fuel company into a diversified operator handling oil, natural gas, natural gas liquids and refined products.
Today, the pipeline network Kelcy Warren envisioned links the Permian Basin, the Bakken Shale, Appalachia and the Gulf Coast, moving hydrocarbons wherever demand happens to be strongest.
